On Monday July 7, 2014 I attended one of the best concerts that I have been to since I started this blog. The concert was the C.O.C.A.I.N.E. In Color Showcase headlined by Antwone Perkins. The show was to reveal the project of the same name that Perkins has been working on for the past two years. There were several other local artists on the set list including Kerry Thomas, DOLO, Young Y and City’ Boii, Renee Lee, Rhakua, Silas and Durdy Costello, M.Dot, and Chief Lion. The event was held at The Plush Groove located on West St. and was hosted by Ignacio with DJ Slim Cutty on the 1’s and 2’s.
The entire atmosphere was cool and everyone was vibing with each artists as they took the stage and performed. Dolo came with his smooth, soulful flow, Chief Lion spit bars with plenty of fire and aggression, Kerry Thomas took the mood in another direction with his sensual vocals from his album “Eye of the Storm”, Renee Lee got the crowd’s attention with her seductive lyrics and catchy flow, Young Y and City Boii had the people turning up with their energy and stage presence, Rahkua performed a few cuts off of her album “Love, Loss, and Lies” and moved gracefully across the stage as she drew the crowd in, Silas performed a few songs from “Rap Revolt” including the Durdy Costello produced “SpeakitIn2existence”, and M. Dot came through and rocked the stage with an assist from Kerry Thomas.
After everyone had shown the crowd what they had, the man of the hour took the stage. Antwone Perkins put on a show with so much soul and passion that everyone in the building connected with him on level beyond just watching someone performing on stage. The way he explained each track before he performed let you know the thought process behind their creation and the feeling that he wanted you to experience throughout the show. He was accompanied by a live band and came out into the crowd interacting with the people as he performed. To put it simply, he was on fire. He was on top of pool tables, he was bouncing around the stage, he was all energy and he gave the people exactly what they wanted.
C.O.C.A.I.N.E. In Color was a great success by any standard, Perkins saw all his hard work pay off on that stage Monday night. I know that he is destined to great things in the future and this was the perfect launch pad for him to ascend to the next level.
