Caitlyn Spane is a singer/rapper that broke out on the scene in a major way by performing an impromptu freestyle during one of the dopest concerts of the year. Amongst some of the best and brightest artists that Jackson has to offer she held her own and caught the crowd’s attention.
She dropped her debut mixtape “Great Intentions” on Saturday September 12th and it features some very jazzy cuts and plenty of soul. The opening track “Jazzy Feelings” featuring TLo Da Champ sets the tone for the project.
The project features many tracks that incorporate live instruments, often blended with backing from the sounds of modern MPCs. “Soul” is a perfect example of this aesthetic; its in the same sonic family as groups like A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and Black Sheep.
The project transitions between upbeat tunes and lovelorn ballads with ease. There is rarely a jarring moment where the themes of each track don’t mesh. “Let Me Know” comes right behind “Soul” and it doesn’t feel like a beat is missed. We hear The Songstrist pleading with her lover to tell her how he really feels and to stop playing games with her heart.
A real standout track for me is “Is This Love”. It’s a cover of one of my all time favorite Bob Marley songs and it is executed beautifully. Caitlyn’s soulful vocals definitely do the song justice and the neo soul feel of the instrumental give it a unique flavor. Definitely one of my favorites on the project.
This is a strong first outing The Songstrist and I’m excited to hear more from her. I think that her and Lizz could create one hell of a collab. Go check out the project.
