D. Horton is one of the most underrated rhymers emerging from Mississippi. The first time I saw the Columbus, MS native perform was at Offbeat for a show with No Suh Foster and the rest of the LDLR camp. Horton had an energy like nothing I had ever experienced before. The crowd moved in closer to him without him requesting it and hung on to every lyric, making sure to catch every moment of intricate wordplay that he was dropping. Heads nodded, hands waved, and everyone was generally impressed with the young wordsmith. His music was relatable, uplifting and informative to the free thinkers in attendance. I made sure to connect with him and his management team to stay in touch.
Fast-forward to early 2016, the inaugural Jackson Indie Music Week was gearing up and I was determined to get D. Horton involved in some way. He and his team secured an interview with our live podcast recording. I hoped he would get to perform because I knew that would guarantee him additions to his fanbase. The universe made it happen, an artist had to drop out at the last minute and Horton was added to the lineup for the Low-End Theory Showcase at The Workshop. It was the ideal setting for him and I witnessed the same reaction from the crowd that I had witnessed a few months prior. The crowd circled around him like a prophet preaching modern day scripture.
Later that year, we released the 2nd Annual Sativa Symphonics mixtape on 4/20/16 and hosted a listening experience at Offbeat. It just so happened that Dave was dropping his project The Sessions 2 that same day. We had a concert as part of the event that featured D Horton, T Lo Da Champ, and Quavias Black. Horton was the headliner and turned the event into a spiritual experience. Several attendees came up to me and said the event felt like church for the free thinkers. Yet again, Horton managed to captivate the crowd.
I say all of this to say, there is no denying that D Horton is a special kind of talent that you don’t cross paths with every day. It’s something intrinsically within him, a magnetic energy that draws people in and leaves a lasting impression. His list of accomplishments is impressive for such a young artist, he’s been a featured artist at A3C, collaborated with major artists, found a collective of like-minded artists from Mississippi and developed a number of connections in Atlanta. His catalog is like a timeline of artistic growth that rivals many mainstream legends.
His first project Laney High dealt with finding the way to see failure and rejection as motivation to work harder rather than give up. He alludes to Michael Jordan’s rejection from the Laney High Varsity Basketball team and how it wasn’t the end of the road for his dreams of greatness.
The Sessions EP showed an artist experiencing growing pains and trying to find the path that is meant for him. It features a diverse mix of vibes and sounds that show experimenting to find his voice.
On Brilliant Minds he had the spark of epiphany that would shape the rest of his releases and help him develop his message to the masses. It was also him looking in the mirror and letting go of all of his doubts in what his purpose is on this planet. He was no longer concerned with the negatives and he was purely focused on finessing the positives into something potent and progressive.
The Sessions 2 he came fully realized in attack mode, unleashing a barrage of brutal bars, crazy wordplay and double entendres intended to awaken the God that resides in us all. It was amazing to hear an artist come with so much confidence, so sure of his abilities and his word while making it all seem so effortless. The chakras aligned perfectly to create the energy that is present on this project. He also got a dope feature from King Los on “Third Base” and held his own with the lethal lyricist.
On his latest project, The Sessions 3P, Dave The Rapper is innovative as ever and creating some of his best material to date. The rollout method for it was interesting, rather than drop the whole 15 track project at once he released it 5 tracks at a time with a single producer handling the sonics for each segment. The first featured New Message!, the second featured 3 Seaven and the third featured his longtime collaborator KT Got Beats. Each component has a unique sound, feel and attitude from Horton. Stand out tracks include “Did That” feat. No Suh Foster, “Drugs” feat. Josh Waters, “Hughes Road”, “Mirror 2x”, “Lose Control” feat. Josias, “Play Wit Em”, and “Sunday Skool Freestyle”. His chemistry with the features is natural and nothing seems forced. Although he seems most at home on KT’s production, he does his thing throughout the entire project. This is his best project to date and seems to be setting up something bigger and bolder in the future.
If you have been sleeping on the amazing talent that is D. Horton, now is the time to wake up. Horton is preparing to release a documentary detailing the creative process behind The Sessions 3 and it will be great to see the work that went into it. He’s on the road to greatness and it won’t be long before he has the industry in his grip and the world nodding along.
