Hailing from Jackson, MS is a collective of artists known as The G.R.O.U.P., which stands for Gentlemen/Girls Rising Over Unnecessary Problems. These enterprising young men and women are using their music to keep them out of trouble and out of the streets. The sonic range of their music is diverse and energetic; they can get the club poppin and they can drop some knowledge about the real world without missing a beat. However, they encompass much more than just rappers and producers. They also have dancers, singers, photographers and other artists among their ranks. I recently got the chance to catch up with G.R.O.U.P. member Twigga to get a little more info on their music, inspirations and origin.

The G.R.O.U.P boasts a pretty large roster: Twigga, Kincaid, Cee, Corinthian, Skillz and Lil Jay of the dance duo BEATS, Jhamasa, Shamare, The Bankhead Brothers, Natt the Photographer and Jimmy (who is currently serving in the armed forces overseas).

The G.R.O.U.P. was started by founding members Kincaid and Cee. Kincaid is an artist that works with several mediums including music, sculpture and painting. Cee is a smooth wordsmith with a laid back appeal and effortless flow on tracks. They both have released mixtapes, “Bizzare Arcade” and “Retro Nights” respectively, that give you a definite idea of their sound. Kincaid’s “Bizzare Arcade” ranges from relaxed soulful cautionary tunes to more aggressive Odd Future like sounds. Cee has a more traditional southern sound that features a very distinct southern drawl tinged rapid fire flow.

Jhamasa Corinthian is a rapper/singer duo that has developed quite a bit of buzz. Their mixtape “Retro Love Arcade” has garnered them tons of attention which has netted them interviews, various articles and a recent feature on MTV.com. The smooth combination of the two artists styles works together like peanut butter and jelly. Very excited to see what they have to offer in the future.

Twigga plays the role of rapper/producer/songwriter in the crew. He’s released two mixtapes, “Summer Mid-Nights” and “Summer Mid-Nights II: Confessions of a Cheater”, which he says were inspired by his past relationships. The tapes tell two parts of a story and he feels like they are only the appetizer to what he is about to drop. He’s currently working on his new mixtape entitled “A Different Breed”, which will contrast the style of the first two tapes and have a hybrid sound. Definitely something to be on the look out for.
