Lil Lonnie is back with more of his trap-infused melodies that are sure to awaken the hustler sleeping within. He’s been on quite a roll with a number of local hits such as “I’m The Type”, “Colors”, and “Special”. His last project TKWGO2 featured assists from heavy hitters Bryson Tiller and K Camp; he was also able to secure Blac Youngsta and Money Man for the “Colors” remix. He’s been featured in Respect Magazine and had an interview with DJ Smallz, so it’s safe to say he’s catching the right ears.
This project shows definite progress and sees Lonnie becoming more confident in his creative ability; he’s crafting catchy hooks and wisdom-laced verses with ease here. I always think back to when I heard him for the first time singing the hook on “No Seal, No Deal” and knowing he would be a serious problem with proper guidance.
With just 3 projects he has electrified the city in a way that very few others have. Some may write him off as another trap or club artist, but there is a lot of depth in his lyrics. He provides a lot of cautionary tales and musical motivation for the youth that see him succeeding. His interview with Respect Magazine is filled gems of knowledge. It’s good to see he has his head on straight and he’s remaining focused.
There are several standout tracks but the Kenji assisted “I Wish” is probably my all-time favorite song from Lonnie. The song is just purely relatable to anyone working to make a dream their reality. “Downfall” has received some consistent radio spins in the area and it’s a solid track that can get the crowd jumping anywhere. “Hate To See” embodies the experience of being an artist working to make it in Jackson; success is sure to attract haters. TrelleGotWings did an excellent job on production for “Expensive Taste”, Lonnie’s bouncy flow perfectly rides the beat.
Overall this is a project that will see you rarely reaching for the skip button. A great tape to throw in when cruising the streets or on the way to vibe session of your choice.
