Marcus the Poet is a huge fan of Tupac and his group the Outlawz, so its no surprise that he was inspired by them when naming his latest project “Outlaw”. Marcus has a mix of new school and old school vibes at play here, which makes the tape versatile and unpredictable. From the very first track, “Intro”, I knew that Marcus The Poet had been creating something special with this project. Marcus handles production on several tracks and brings his A game lyrically throughout the tape. “Karma”, one of my favorite tracks from the project, features a bouncy, 70’s tinged beat that would fit perfectly in a scene from “The Mack”. Marcus and Cool Ass Rallo (of Blacdadi Strahberies) then take to the track and easily rip through the beat. With Marcus’ tight, measured flow and Rallo’s soulful warbling in his verse creates a very dope track.
“Ode 2 Laurel” is also a dope track, as the Poet let’s you know what it’s all about in his hometown of Laurel, MS. “God Will It” is another standout cut. The inspiring hook and authentic lines make this a track to put in rotation for any of the dreamers out there.
Marcus brings along Z-Flow on the track “Top Ten” where they both go in over a jazzy, melodic beat. Z-Flow spits a standout verse that will keep this track playing out your system so you can try to catch and decipher his bars. Dope for sure.
Overall, “Outlaw” is a solid entry in the mixtape scene. Definitely worth a download and a listen. Stay tuned for some big news about some upcoming collabs between The Hood Hippie and Marcus The Poet. This tape is Hood Hippie Approved.
