Keyone Starr could be found nearly every weekend performing at The Penguin located in the rear of Jackson State University’s campus. The songstress has overcome many obstacles in her journey to success including a house fire last year. So to see her get so much success is truly a moment of confirmation that hard work really pays off. It makes me so happy to see such a talented artist from Mississippi get a chance to be on the national stage and represent the state the right way.
In a recent interview with Billboard, Mark Ronson gave Starr some very high accolades, “We wanted a young Chaka Khan on it, but there just wasn’t anybody coming to mind. Jeff was like, ‘We’re going to drive down to the South, we’re going to call it the Mississippi Mission, and go to the churches.’ It was a wild idea that became a reality.”
Ronson knew when he first saw Keyone that she had the look and once he saw that she had the talent he knew his trip down South was all worth it, “She just looked so badass. I remember thinking: it would be awesome if this one could sing really great,” Ronson says. “She just opened her mouth and she had it instantly. I’m so drawn to singers with rasp and something broken in their voice, where you really hear the rawness.”
