“S.T.A.R.S.” is the latest project from the homie T. Troop. The mixtape tracks are all named after the rappers and singers that the beats are borrowed from. It’s a pretty inventive idea and the cover art is dope as it gets. I’ve been following Troop for a while now and he doesn’t disappoint with this project.
On “Bobby Shmurda” Troop is in flex mode and makes light work of the hit track. “Ty Dolla Sign” features frequent collaborators LakeViewDrive and Johnny Rockets, the beat flip at the end is unexpected and Troop hops on it with a switched up flow that decimates for the finale.
“J. Cole” features fellow TFG member LV and finds both MC’s in storyteller mode. Troop lays out the rules of a true hustler in the midst of a cautionary verse. “Beyoncé” features a slowly building piano melody and songstress Andea opening up the track before the beat takes a Kanye style turn from his “808’s and Heartbreak” era.
“Nicki Minaj” is one of the best tracks on the whole project because it is the most genuine. You can hear the emotion in Troop and India’s performances. The track is short and sweet, which makes it stand out even more. The final track “Drizzy” is the hardest with the bars, Troop goes in on the familiar beat.
Overall, “S.T.A.R.S.” seems like the appetizer for the main course, which leaves me wondering what Troop is currently cooking up. Listen to the project below:
